What are thinking strings?

To the extinct /Xam people of southern Africa, “thinking strings” were a metaphor for human consciousness and intellectual activity.

/Han≠kass’o, a /Xam man who related stories of his people, said that spirit people “no longer possess their thinking-strings – they cannot understand.”

Patricia Vinnicombe described thinking strings as humanity’s “thinking powers.”

Thinking strings were sometimes painted emanating from the heads of people and therianthropes in the rock art of the Drakensberg mountains in southern Africa.
