Revealing® World History to 1500 provides an overview of world history from prehistory to about 1500 CE. In reviewing thousands of years of significant events, phenomena, and people, Revealing® World History to 1500 aims for global coverage of world societies, valuing their contributions on their own merits, not simply by their supposed impact on western society.

A common challenge for teachers of history is how to balance breadth and depth of historical material, especially in a World History survey course. If not managed carefully, students can quickly get lost in information overload and miss the key historical issues from the content they are supposed to grasp. Students often complain about how to know what is most relevant from the material they are reading, and they struggle trying to remember it all.

Revealing® World History to 1500 attempts to focus on conciseness and “digestible” segments of information presented in a format that improves memory of the material. The courseware provides a balanced approach to “world” history rather than focusing on western civilization with some nods to other parts of the world. As such, some sections may seem too brief and others too comprehensive depending on the teacher’s existing knowledge of those regions of the world; but for an undergraduate student in a survey course, it aims to cover the major topics, figures, historical processes, and developments of each world region. And rather than immerse the most relevant content amidst paragraphs and paragraphs of prose, the bullet points at the beginning and ending of each section guide the student to the most important take-away points.

The content pages then flesh out the key material of that topic. The page by page images reinforce content material with pictures of artifacts, structures, maps, and other material related to the text. The Try-its at the end of each section provide further contact with the key material thereby providing the reader multiple opportunities from beginning to end of a topic to reinforce memory of the key historical issues related to that topic. While one can always argue that certain information has been missed, often that material contributes to the “information overload” students usually experience in history courses especially when trying to cover thousands of years of world history. In places where a teacher would like to dig deeper, either for specific pedagogical purposes or based on one’s expertise, or where a student would like to do more research for a course assignment, the teacher can add or direct to supplementary materials, some of which can be found in the courseware bibliography.

The modules of Revealing® World History to 1500 (corresponding to textbook chapters) are primarily divided by region for ease of understanding development over time within a region while also allowing students to draw parallels between regions.

  2. Ancient Near East
  3. India

  5. Greece

The coverage by area highlights the regional nature of early history that began to change at the dawn of the Early Modern Age as ocean navigation resulted in more interregional interaction. The regional coverage also helps students appreciate some of the distinctive characteristics and features of individual societies that can still be seen in various cultures today.

The modules of Revealing® World History to 1500 can be approached in whatever order preferred, although the regional modules basically follow a chronological schema based on when the earliest civilizations or complex societies developed within each area. The introductory module explores the definition of history and its relationship to the past, and addresses how we know what we know about what happened long ago. Distributed throughout Revealing® World History to 1500 are sections highlighting building blocks of civilization (for example, trade, military, community building projects) that provide content and discussion points for better understanding the common phenomena found in the development of complex societies throughout the world.

The regional discussions include concise descriptions of key figures and developments. Accompanying resources help students learn and retain material, and aid instructors in the design of their classes. Revealing® World History to 1500 includes maps, timelines, and thousands of images to contextualize and illustrate the material. “Read Buttons” present selections from primary sources, allowing students the opportunity to analyze and extrapolate information from original material. Interactive activities following each section of reading go behind simple recall, leading to deeper learning. A bank of thousands of review questions and an extensive, searchable glossary provide further resources all in one place and linked to the main text. Students can insert bookmarks and annotations (notes) as they work with the courseware.

Revealing® World History to 1500 makes students’ learning experience richer and more meaningful. Ultimately, students better retain the material through the optimized use of proven learning methods. Revealing World History to 1500 CE is an easy fit for both distance learning courses or regular classroom adoption. By teaching world history in an engaging manner that is proven to enhance independent learning, Revealing World History to 1500 CE frees up class time for the kind of learning that teachers provide best: facilitation of student interaction, discussion, and the opportunity to address specific student needs and interests.
